This is my first ever tutorial, after a few requests I decided to take a leap and see how it goes. 8) I hope you guys learn something from it, and I hope its actually clear. @_@ Im not terribly great at instructing.

This is meant for photoshop users, it may apply in some way to other programs though.

Hmmm that blocking in colours painting technique looks like something I really should try out. Thanks for reminding me that can be too instead of always bleding everything together. :meow:

thats all you can do! 8) I dont believe you should copy something completely anyway, its better just to learn techniques and see what works for you.

for me it's kinda hard though
cus my style changes alot
recently its been settling but I'm still not completly sure what type of art I want to do for a living
some part of me wants to do comics and make stories, some part of me wants to design or maybe go into Pixar, and the other just has no clue
it's a huge point of stress for me and one of the big reasons I think my style is so erratic

Mine does too. XD Thats why I havent done a tutorial before.

Theres no reason you cant do both! Artists can do whatever they want, and are capable of doing many styles, most artists are actually required to do this! Especially for companies like pixar, you have to adapt your art to fit the official style of a specific project.
Dont stress about it 8) Whatever main thing you may choose, you can always practise the other thing in your own time. Many artists on big projects actually do their own projects on the side as well.

no worries 8)
So do every artist in history XD Even masters are overly critical of their work, but thats what makes you improve. just make sure its not the kind that makes you want to quit, it should make you want to improve 8)

But how exactly you put a new layer below the first one? It's impossible to paint over the sketch on it.

Its not impossible, I did it didn't I? X3

First you have the sketch layer, then you create a new layer under that and set the sketch layer mode to "multiply". The layer modes can be found in the layers window just under the word 'layers', it will be defaulted to 'normal'.

This is a great way to easily paint under inked or sketched drawings 8)

Ah I get it, so that's how it's done!
You see, when you make tutorial, you have to say most of these details. Many people like me doesn't know how to do that. It's my former teachers said: "when you present something, you must talk like the audience is completely stupid."

If you ever have any other questions, feel free to ask 8)

I did this particular tutorial with the assumption that those reading it know the basics of Photoshop, there are more in depth ones out there, and also guides to photoshop. I just wanted to keep it simple and to the point. :)

I'm afraid I will not learn how to speedpaint any soon.
First because I'm retarded, my english is terrible and it prevented me to even understand your tutorial.
Second, I use a mac, so there's no such thing as SAI mac version.
Third, I never painted my whole life, so I don't even know the basics of painting.
Fourth, I don't even what's "overlay" or "vivid light".
I'm faving anyway, maybe someday I will be able to overcome this weakness.

I didnt use SAI for this, I have a mac too :) I used photoshop. All it takes is the eye dropper tool.

I'm terrible at painting! XD you dont have to know too much about it I think, though knowledge of basic art is required; tone, colour, shape, etc.

You'll never improve if you dont try, we all have to start at 0. 8)

I would advise watching youtube tutorials and the like, that way you can see what they do instead of reading it. 8)

This is a rather good Tutorial. I only have Photoshop Elements version 10, which i think is like photoshop but doesn't have have all the same tools & equipment. But i can take ideas from this tutorial and see if i can find an alternative for it in Elements.
Great job.
